I watched USA and Australia Olympic trial this year so I'm sure I will have more knowledge about the straightest sports this Olympic than the Tokyo one lmao

Several gold medalists from Tokyo didn't even qualified for Paris :nervous:

Definitely will catch some soccer and volleyball games even tho USA will not medal in Paris :bigcry:

Women's climbing too I hope Janja qualified?

Just commenting to say thanks for making the thread. I'm really excited for climbing, I first watched it in Tokyo and was obsessed. Also archery but apparently the 3x gold medal winner from Tokyo wasn't selected for Paris which is questionable but I'm sure SK will still win gold.

I'd love to learn more about climbing. The strength of the athletes is

I'd also add track and field. The middle distances are my favorite.

Let's go swimming, gymnastics and diving :dance2:

Hoping to watch a lot of different sports this year if I can depending on my work schedule. My country (Aus) does decently at the games so always excited to watch them, but really excited to watch some of the newer sports too.

Swimming and gymnastics are always my go to summer games classics. Also enjoy diving and track and field. I try to watch a little bit of everything. I watch basketball and soccer year round, so I don't usually watch those until the medal games.

I‘m not even as outraged as I‘m supposed to be about this because it is absolutely not surprising. Sports organizations have shown time and time again that they don‘t care about abuse or sexual violence shown towards women and in this case even a child. It happens in tennis, in football, now in volleyball and probably even more that I don‘t know about. Whenever allegations come up it‘s always just ‘innocent until proven guilty bla bla‘ but when someone is found guilty, including a prison sentence, that gets shrugged off as well.
Sports organizations absolutely do not care about the safety of women. :argh:

Is there anyone here living in Paris?
How is the atmosphere in the city now? Are people feeling excited about the Olympics?
I read some news saying the overall flights to Paris haven't increased significantly and the hotel room fees have risen a lot, and there are also security concerns so it's not expected that there will be a massive influx of tourists.

x2 How's the crime? I read about a tourist got raped not far from Eiffel tower. And the riots recently. Also very easy for jihadist who wanna "revenge" Israel athletes. If not local French jihadists there are plenty from Brussels

Everybody was concerned about the general election until last night.
Airbnb and hotel rates are falling very quickly because they tried to rip the tourists off but no one took the bait.
Air France certainly had a huge dip in flight booking during the Olympics.
Regarding security there is the usual terrorist threat.

Paris is gonna be poverty olympic compared to Tokyo. Macron and Paris mayor blabbing about swimming in Seine but they never did it lmao and they don't have back up plan

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/560093 ... -swimming/

Paris’ Seine River still dangerously contaminated for swimmers as Summer Olympics near
There are 28 days until the Summer Olympics opening ceremony, and tests from the historic Seine River show the water is still at dangerous contamination levels for E. coli, which is often linked to fecal bacteria.
Previously, organizers have said there is no fallback plan or backup location in case the wet weather persists. One option could be to turn the triathlon into a duathlon, comprised only of cycling and running.

French President Emmanuel Macron and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo have continued to argue their decade-long efforts will have the scenic river ready in time for the events. Both have said they plan on swimming in the river themselves to prove its cleanliness.

France recently forced people to delay their retirement cuz the gov don't wanna pay the retirement checks. That's why Macron so desperate to send military to fight Russia/involve in full scale war Europe v Russia. Money from weapon industry.

There's been a bit of a political mess since the end of May due to the European and parliamentary elections, but that's dissipating now that the elections are over.

On the other hand, the French, especially the Parisians, don't seem to be any more excited than that.
Perhaps the general excitement will be felt in a few days' time (the great political wave having passed and most workers/students/youngs starting their vacations).

People are now a little more interested in the euro: France is in the semi-finals and the excitement is starting to build.

In terms of infrastructure, I've noticed that some work is nearing completion, as is the case in my street.
The media and representatives inform us that, for the moment, there are fewer tourists than expected, so some hoteliers and owners are going to lower prices to attract more (they had raised prices too much, overconfidence on their side lol).

on the security front, a large number of gendarmes and police officers have been mobilized, as the police authorities wish to "clean house" before the Olympics.
Honestly, there are obviously some areas to avoid, but I'd say they're the same as anywhere else in the world.

I know they did a test event in the Seine like 3-4 months ago and most of the swimmers caught some kind of disease because the Seine was and still is polluted. From what I got told, there had to look at plan B after this.

Vive la France! 🇫🇷

The Olympics have long promoted safe sex. Now it wants to focus on pleasure.
The City of Love has a message as it prepares for the Olympics: Performance is not always the priority. Rather, when it comes to sex, pleasure takes first place.

As Paris starts welcoming athletes to the Olympic Village in the coming days, organizers of the 2024 Games are set to launch a comprehensive sexual health campaign that champions pleasure and consent as well as the traditional emphasis on safety.

It is an important message, backed by research, that is rarely endorsed on a stage with a global spotlight as influential as the Olympics.

Prioritizing pleasure in sexual health refers to the approach of celebrating the physical and mental benefits of sexual experiences as well as minimizing the risks. It aims to rewrite fear and shame narratives that cast sex as taboo, with sexual health organizations promoting the sex-positive method as fundamental for unlocking greater agency over sexual rights and well-being.

This year, organizers in charge of first aid announced that over 200,000 male condoms, 20,000 female condoms, and 10,000 dental dams would be made available at the Paris Olympic Village, which will host around 14,500 athletes. They will also have numerous sexual health testing centers on site for athletes, in addition to the sexual health awareness messaging.
