I don’t follow the wsl… how has arsenal become the more popular wsl team among woso fans in England?
Chelsea trolls are going to have a conniption over this post so ignore them being condescending just because they hate their rival. I think there are a few reasons:
-

Chelsea are by far the best team in the league. They deserve their kudos, and they’re doing a lot more in recent years than they previously have to grow the fan base. I do think people weirdly like an underdog though and that’s why some fans go for Arsenal in place of Chelsea. Arsenal consistently come in the top 3, so there is still the taste and promise of reward. Some trolls like to say Arsenal are so bad but they aren’t really. Their playing style is entertaining to watch especially now Jonas is gone and they can play with more freedom.
Thank you for your response. I was really curious about how they got so popular if for the past years they haven’t been the most winning team in the wsl. What you wrote makes a lot of sense
All good. Chelsea have been great in the last 5/6 years - absolutely dominating the league. I think their coach Emma Hayes is the main reason, plus star players like Kerr who kill it week in, week out. But prior to that, Arsenal were always the dominant club. The fanbase has always been the biggest, but it’s sky rocketed since the euros and World Cup for sure for those above reasons.
Da adding to this. I think male fans who normally follow the men’s Arsenal team have been way more open in supporting the Arsenal women’s team too in recent years. That brings in even more fans. I was shocked at the game on the weekend just how many men and young boys were there and knew all the players names and follow the team etc. Even the uber ride home my driver was an Arsenal supporter and he knew heaps of info and facts about the women’s team and had been following the game commentary. Have noticed the same with Liverpool too - one club mentality for supporters which is so great! This is how the women’s game will grow also.
Arsenal have been sharing a YouTube accounts for what 10 years with both teams and would always put up women’s videos on the account so male supporters would always be aware of what the women’s team were up to.

Also I think the weplaystrong blogs did a heap of good too.

Chelsea trolls are going to have a conniption over this post so ignore them being condescending just because they hate their rival. I think there are a few reasons:
- Quite a few key players who are massively famous in woso are at the club (Leah Williamson, Alessia Russo, Beth Mead, Katie McCabe etc.)
- Has one of the most Lionesses out of all WSL teams (Leah, Beth, Russo, Lotte, now Chloe Kelly) so attracted fans after the euros win
- They had a smart marketing strategy early days doing vlogs so fans got to know the playing group better. Human connection has proven to be a main selling point in getting females interested in woso
- After the WC many Australians started supporting the club because it had three main Matildas (Steph Catley, Caitlin Foord, Kyra Cooney Cross), the most of any team
- Historically they have won the most trophies and have always been a leading women’s team. The club in general has a massive fanbase - so that helps tremendously with building an audience. People feel connected to the club as they invest more/have better fan-based marketing/media channels
- The team has always had big historical players too - Kelly Smith, Alex Scott etc.
- There for sure are fans interested in the relationships at the club - used to have Leah/Jordan, Beth/Viv, Lia/Caitlin now Caitlin/Katie and Lia/Mariona

DA a lot of good points, but I think winning the league in 2019 was the root of their current popularity. That was the year the FA player launched and suddenly everyone could watch any game they wanted to. If you weren’t here before, you cannot imagine how revolutionary that was. Media coverage and visibility of the league increased massively that season. And to all those new viewers, Arsenal was the golden team.
And yes, the personal plays a key role as well. Viv’s daughter in law clip had gone viral, she was the superstar of the league, the Netherlands were European champions and World Cup finalists, her and Lisa were out and open and Lisa shared a lot of their lives on a vlogging channel. The team seemed genuinely good friends and featured several more or less accessible couples.
From then on their popularity snowballed, for a lot of reasons the other anon already mentioned.

The same thing Barca does. Chelsea is still far behind Arsenal and Barca in marketing and popularity. And they just sign every tom, dck, harry. Their men's team don't care about the women, where as Arsenal and Barca have very supportive teams. Their wins are flukes and have a dead fanbase, who never show up to matches or even if they come, they just sit there like dumbs
Chelsea only got 3,648 fans on Sunday, which is mental when you consider their success. Maybe Kingston isn't a great location for fans? Not too sure what they are doing so wrong?

It's all about marketing. How much you sell yourself. And social media is the best platform, where Chelsea is dead. They simply don't care. Just look at the royal treatment Kelly got from Arsenal, in return fans, where as Chelsea got two high profile signings yet couldn't hold the excitement for more than two days. English people love to see their own. Chelsea being too diverse isn't for them.

This stadium isn't just used by Barcelona, it's a temporary home they rent. It's supposed to be too late for the maintenance of the playing turf due to the heavy schedule.

Arsenal is a marketing team, Chelsea is a professional team. There is a big difference.
Buddy revenue is required for sustainance. What Chelsea have got with all those wins? Sponsors hoard infront of Barca and Arsenal. Their players are faces of big brands. And look at Chelsea. Clubs need revenue for survival and revenue comes from tickets and sponsors. They have Lucy and Keira, two popular Lionesses and now Girma, who is a hot property now. Still they're not able to capitalize. Their games become boring with no spectators

Da as someone who actually lives in Chelsea 10 mins from Stamford Bridge, the community just isn’t as fanatical compared to North London (Arsenal namely). Or even Manchester/Liverpool. Fascinating stuff and that’s the heart of the issue.

They have insta handle with more than 4M followers and twitter with 1M, yet their posts get around 10k likes, with Arsenal having around 2M followers get far more likes. Even city's 4 fans are more dedicated than chels's whole fanbase. It's not only about the women's team. The men team too face the same. Neither the club nor fans care.

Don’t be ridiculous. “Invasive advertising” is also a stupid thing to say, what about the “invasive advertising” chelsea did for the Chelsea v Arsenal home game? It’s just called marketing. Everyone does it. Arsenal got over 40,000 attendance for both of those games with no marketing. Attendance “wasn’t that great”?! Equivalent of selling out Stamford Bridge twice with no advertising 😂 And besides that was the point - they were understanding baseline attendance figures to determine how much marketing is actually needed to draw full capacity crowds.

You clearly weren’t at the Arsenal game so wouldn’t have an idea about the atmosphere in comparison to Stamford Bridge. Stop trolling. Arsenal fans are sending compliments your way in terms of your success in the past 5 years and you’re still having these jealous stupid arguments over attendance.

Barça men are playing 4 matches there during the month of March. Barça fem is playing RM there. All of this meanwhile the stadium is being used for other events too (not related to football or barça). They can’t do the turf maintenance with so much overload so they had to move the Wolfsburg game back to johan stadium, which sucks. This wouldn’t have happened if barça was already back at camp nou

This is such an awesome campaign! Normalising period blood stains as many young girls don’t play sports because they fear this happening during a game.

Arsenal have been sharing a YouTube accounts for what 10 years with both teams and would always put up women’s videos on the account so male supporters would always be aware of what the women’s team were up to.

Also I think the weplaystrong blogs did a heap of good too.
Arsenal and Barca men's team are forced to support their women team by PR group! When Arsenal didn't invasive advertising for City and Chelsea matches at Emirates, attendance wasn't that great. To that NLD Arsenal prepared for 5 months, and I would say 57k didn't made any better atmosphere than Chelsea has at the bridge.

U know tickets sale and actual attendance isn't the
same. They announced 40k + but in reality there was 30k in the stands, same was in Sunday, whatever but nowhere near 57k! At least Chelsea do not cheat with their real attendance.
These are official attendance numbers declared to officials after the game. Not going to bother going back and forth because you’re just a shit stirrer and a liar lmfao. People have eyes and there are plenty of videos that prove it absolutely was 56k on the weekend.

The answer is that Arsenal fans are more intense than Chelsea fans. And that's okay. Arsenal should be ashamed of themselves for not giving their fans titles. Chelsea fans are happy.

They would beat Chelsea.

I am not the op but its true. If chelsea made women share their mens gym arsenal fans will be the first to shout cfcw don't have their own facilities. Just loud pr about one club doesnt change the fact that awfc has to share gym equipment with men ak only use it when they are not using it. Todd boehly saw how shitty cfcw gym was said that's not ok and build them a new gym. Awfc wish they had owners who cared instead of kicking them out of "their home too" for a men's league cup game lol

Someone asked why Arsenal have such a large fan base despite not being that successful. Some anons gave what I thought were fair, thoughtful explanations. Then your petty little attendance fight kicked off. I don’t care who started it, you are all the same to me.
