i don’t get how zinsberger has suddenly taken such a nosedive in performances anyway. like 2 & 3 seasons ago she was one of the best in the league. i don’t think she’s shit or anything rn but you can’t deny she’s dropped in form and it’s weird to me. sometimes it’s like she can’t be bothered, so won’t bother to jump for a ball or bother to move her feet.
Mate she hasn’t! She was horrendous for half the season but she’s been good second half of the season . I actually blame a lot of goals conceded since Christmas on the defence but Arsenal fans blind to their centre backs mistakes cause “childhood gooner” and “family fc” and all that. But if toure looking at it objectively, manu been good last six months
This is a bit long but whatever ig.
The defence has definitely been a problem this season. Lotte has been better than she ever has on a personal level, but it’s still not really an incredible overall level (not taking away from the fact she has improved though). Leah’s been returning from ACL, and had other injury issues in that, so she’s not been completely 100%. Then we had Amanda who was shaky trying to fit into the side at first, then once i thought she’d finally got somewhere she’s pregnant so out. Codina has been fine, not great but not absolutely poor (though she’s also had to adjust too, and had some rocky games).
Then there’s partnerships. Lotte and Amanda were forgettable. Lotte and Leah have had their great games and their bad games (the problem is Leah is still working on adjusting herself and trying to manage that while also finding time for the two to really find their way as a duo, which there hasn’t been enough of anyway). Lotte and Codina were fine (some people rave as though they’re some amazing duo, but I disagree. Fine though, yes). Leah and Codina were also been fine in the very few games/times we’ve seen that.
That’s kinda why I don’t get why Jonas wasn’t playing Codina instead of Steph recently, alongside Leah. Why wouldn’t you work on an alternative centre back partnership in games that realistically aren’t going to change much for the outcome of our season?
Hopefully next season with Lotte carrying on her better form and improving even more, and Leah having been more steady and not managing a return from ACL, we’ll see more ease with our backline. Also hoping they’ll play some friendlies pre-season and the camp and such will just help to work on those relationships between players.
[ Now that I think about it more, I do get why our defence has been so poor. There have been so many changes, it’s hard to have a good defence with that. Also there was the issue with Manu being so poor in the first half of the season. ]
Yeah I agree with all this. There’s definitely been a lot of changes in the defence so, though I do think they should’ve done better anyway, it is easier to understand why they’ve not had the best defensive record this season.
Going into next season, I wonder if they should take a new look on the formation. 5 at the back, with wingbacks. McCabe and Fox on the sides, they both like to run and get involved up top so that’s good. Then Codina-Williamson-Wubben Moy at the back. That would give us extra defensive strength, and if something did happen to cause one of them to be out, we wouldn’t be changing too much to adjust. Also Leah could move more into midfield when we’re progressing the ball, since she’s got 2 other CB’s working with her. I just think that this would play to everyone’s strengths in that backline, and to each personal asset the players have. Idk, just wish Jonas would shake it up a little.
da. i’ve actually said this before myself lol. like pretty much exactly.
i agree on wishing jonas would shake things up, he’s got this one vision and it just does not work. like in his vision he didn’t see viv as a 9, and now we’ve lost one of the most effective 9’s arsenal have ever had.
wish he could just try new things and be dedicated to trying them out (bc giving a back 5/3 a shot in one game and seeing it not work out so ditching it, is dumb. it’s never going to work 100% right away, it needs time to flourish, as all formations and combinations do).
