I just realised Steph Houghton and Jordan Nobbs are the only players to play in every season of WSL and Steph will play her last game with Jordan. It’s like a passing of the torch. They were Captain/Vice Captain of England for a bit together too. That’s kinda cute, hope we get a hug or something. Assume they’re still on ok terms?
Yeah, they were never on bad terms. All professional there.
But is Steph even on the pitch nowadays?
Jordan posted for her retirement so they seem all good.
They have a lot to relate over with Sarina too. I reckon they’ll bring Steph on for the last game surely? Even at the end of it?
Whether they share any opinions on Sarina, only the two of them will know. But I don't think there's too much to relate to there. Steph never got called up again and never really understood why, whereas Jordan did get called up on and off again. Jordan has more to relate to with Zelem and Lucy S than Steph in that regard.
Now why Sarina didn't call up Steph Houghton again after the pre-Euros camp really would be an interesting discussion, especially since Sarina's treatment of another captain coming back after injury has differed so much. Was there more to it?
I think it just boils down to the following:
1. Sarina didn't want Steph as England captain going forward
2. Sarina didn't see Steph as essential to a transitioned England team going forward
3. Sarina likes Leah as captain
4. FA likes Leah as captain (publicity cha-ching)
I think it's all of that wrapped up in the fact that you can't explain the merit of your being excluded when it's not really based on merit.
Like look at Sarina's most recent call-ups. Imagine her trying to explain some of those to any number of competing players who are playing consistent minutes and performing at club and not receiving a callup.
