Teagan about to be liable for my therapy bill with that “pushed me, coached me, protected me” line. OOOOOF. Direct hit to the heart. That tribute video from all of the girls to her (surely they’ll make one) is going to be a rough go. Beautiful I am sure, though

Nothing from Macca about Lydia? I thought she was the patron Saint of thoughtfulness and kindness according to you lot? :eyeroll:
Yeah, they are all on social media 24/7. Not training, in the gym, doing media, playing football🙄

This is a really silly thing to say given she’s probably at training with West Ham. No doubt she will say something later. One of my favourite photos from the WC was the one of her and lyds consoling each other at the end of the Sweden game when lyds had taken herself off and sat by one of the goalposts. The GK union is very close and push each other and I’m sure Lydia will be massively missed by those two.
I saw that moment with my own eyes. The connection between our GKs, all of them, is quite special.

Don't mind the haters
OMG that moment was heartbreaking. I cried seeing it! Do you think she'll likely play for the Arsenal friendly game then, and that will be her send off? Or she'll get some minutes in the tillies friendly a week later?
I agree with what others here already said about her getting a game or a half vs China.

I actually thought the reason they picked Lydia for the all-stars was because it's against her former club. I think it would be nice if she and Jada share a half there.
Agree with this. New fans might not know Lyds actually played at Arsenal for two years. I hope she gets to play against them too.

For anyone who didn't catch The Project. I did tear up towards the end (though I do cry at anything and everything).

I did too. She has been such a steady presence in the squad 🥹 Teagan and Mecca are so, so lucky to have had her to learn from.
This. What an absolute legend and leader. Some of the post World Cup newer fans don’t know how good Lyds used to be, but she was genuinely a fantastic goalkeeper in her prime. I also always had a sense of calm when she was in net that I never really had with Macca and Teagan (though I love them). She will really be missed and I think she picked the right time to go.
There were so many moments during Tokyo 2020 you could tell she was keeping Teagan cool and calm. The way Teagan went to her right away at halftime and at the conclusion of games spoke volumes. I hope Teagan talks about that in a tribute video or something, if we could so visibly see their connection I would love to hear about what it felt like in the moment

Considering she won’t be part of the 18 unless injury occurs to macca or Teagan, I wonder if Lydia will get 1 of the china games as her tillies farewell? Or if not a whole game, maybe either a half or a sub appearance or something?!
She’ll certainly get a China game. Probably a half. I would think maybe she starts/gets pulled at half for one of Teagan or Macca. Hoping Teagan gets some minutes in one of the China games so that might be a perfect solution. Split a game with Lyds. The symbolism of that would be remarkable too considering the changing of the guard vibe those two had at Tokyo 2020

Omg Teagan’s story of them through the years made me cry more. To be fair I had just watched the Matildas announcement video but still. “You pushed me, coached me, and protected me” 😭😭😭
That's the line that absolutely took me out 😭💔.

And the line in her interview where Lyds says, "I was there for everyone's first cap and now they'll be there for my last" 😭.

Post olympics retirement I’m sorry but
She shouldn’t be picked she’s not played for months… jada just won the comp
She will be the emergency GK because she's retiring. Jada will have plenty of opportunities moving forward.

So I take it this means Lyds is fully recovered and can be in contention for the third GK spot for the Olympics?
No 3rd GK spot for an 18 player Olympics squad

GK spots 100% going to Macca and Teagan
There will be 4 emergency backup players and one of them is bound to be a GK.
One has to be a GK. So it'll come down to Jada or Lyds as the alternate. If the announcement is Lyds international retirement, it'll be intriguing to hear whether it's effective immediately or she says after the Olympics.

So who will be the all stars starting xi? Predictions?
Had to think about this, and tbh the defenders are interesting because there's 1 RB (who has been playing midfield at times), 1 LB and 4 CBs (3 of whom are LCBs)... But I would have a 4-3-3- lineup...

Whyman
Matos, Morrison, Stott, Foster
Chidiac, Yallop, Hawkesbury
Vine, Heyman, Harding

Subs: Lyds, Cerne, Maher, EKK, Pollicina, Ibini, Simon, Wilkinson

Go out hard with the experience, and then have variability for subs.
I’m not very familiar with the a league girls and have only watched a few games towards the end of the season. Who would be marking Steph, Cait and KCC, and is it a fairly even playing field?
It'd Steph v Cortnee, Caitlin v Matos (which could lead to a few goals for Cait) and Kyra would be up against Hawk / Meeks. Kayla said on her stories tho that she wants to slide tackle Kyra hahaha, and I'm just imagining Kayla going at her like Kyra did Hempo.

Yep sounds it! Maybe she isn’t returning from injury well and they’ve decided to call it.
No offence but she’s not big enough to stop the news cycle like this. Her retiring isn’t a major announcement, maybe it’s got something to do with First Nations football development and the Matildas if she’s in an interview 🤷‍♀️

Happy to see Kayla Morrison but a lot of the rest of the selection is questionable. Aquino won every goalkeeper award possible this season and doesn’t get selected but Lyds who’s been off injured for months does? Clearly a bias towards past Matildas
