Sydney sider here- Def go Sydney don’t bother with Brisbane it’s a shit hole and there is nothing to do apart from see this big brown river (i hate brisvegas). Def try and get up to Perth as the beaches are completely different to Sydney beaches much more white sand, aqua water, and sun sets on water unlike Sydney beaches which are more golden sand, darker blue water, and sun rises from water not sets. Love the beach so def can give u some good recs for that - bondi is overrated AF full of tourists but u should prob check out, skip manly and the eastern suburbs beaches. Best Sydney beaches are on the northern beaches (beautiful and literally empty half the time). If you want rlly good Sydney restaurants look into Merivale restaurants, they are a bit on the expensive side but to die for (Mr. Wongs, Tottis etc). And for tourist stuff def do bridge climb, go to circular quay and have drinks at Opra bar, go shopping in city and east, and go to Taronga zoo. Have fun Aussies love Canadians (hate Americans) and remember that aussie weather is fucked humid in summer so depending what time of year its hosted, pack carefully and wear sunscreen. and for the love of god if ur going to swim at a beach SWIM BETWEEN THE FLAGS!!!!
Da. Different Sydney sider who visited Brisbane during the WC and I preferred it haha! Very stunning place now actually, the howard smith wharves precinct is unreal and all the river walks are lovely. New farm park and James Street also a great place to visit and all still central to the CBD. The people are also nicer (as evident based on the above comment which is peak Sydney snob), more chill and easy-going. Defs keep Sydney as your base because the final will be played here and there is good tourist stuff to do between games, but do go to Brisbane for a few days too. Perth is nice but it's such a struggle to get to and also quite expensive. If you want nice beaches like that you could do North Qld trip to Airlie Beach/Whitsundays.
You all acting like Canberra doesn’t exist. Embrace the bush capital! I promise it’s better than Ottawa.
It pains me as a Melburnian to say that I agree with others and you should consider Sydney as your base if you want to do lots of touristy stuff.

The only thing I think is that Sydney might be more expensive than the others, but I don't know if it's that big of a difference.

I agree about checking out Brisbane if you have time, but if you are pressed for time and you are only thinking of checking out beaches, New South Wales has its own really nice beaches that are just day trips from Sydney. Brisbane is a good destination if you wanna do scuba diving, snorkelling, etc though.

I also recommend coming down to Melbourne for a few days to just check out the city, but to be honest we don't have anything very touristy here that aren't in other states. Although, there is the penguin march in Phillip Island - look that up if that's something you're interested in. There is also a pier here near the city where you can wait for penguins to arrive during the sunset.

I hope you enjoy your time here, and don't hesitate to ask more questions.

Also, aren't you worried your gf might be here too haha. And who are her fave Matildas?
She is def not in here! I had to search for weeks and ask around to find somewhere I could post about it where she wouldn’t be. She has a Reddit account so that was too risky, same with like…a FB group or something. She won’t find here and on the slim off chance she does it’s no biggie. It’s a trip she’s aware of! I just want to see how much of it I can plan as a surprise myself.

Her favourites are Raso and Carpenter! If you are wondering how much it cost to get her a jersey of each one and have it shipped to Canada: a billion dollars. Not really but it felt like it 😅 she has a Raso home and a Carpenter away. Though I don’t think we can bring those because they’ll have new ones by 2026 right? I don’t have a favourite myself (yet?) so no jersey for me

I’ve been looking at spots to stay in Sydney and it seems like it’ll be perfect. Cost doesn’t matter as much. I would like to save where I can but not too pressed about it. It looks like we can fit the zoo in with other stuff during the day? It doesn’t appear to be too far from other things. Please correct me if I’m wrong! I definitely do want to check out other cities. Staying only in Sydney would limit us in some ways I think? I want us to do everything we can to maximize what will probably be 3 weeks in a country we have never been to before.

It’s a tourist trap but I love it anyway - Bondi Beach is gorgeous. There are a lot of cafes and restaurants nearby as well. Grab a coffee and walk along the cliff tops, watch some surfers, check out the pool.

the dvd and ellie thread is surprisingly quiet
It's because there is just one psycho ellie/daan fan who posted non stop in here and replied to themselves and then a thread was created and it's clear she was the main one. So if she isn't posting, no one is.
No. I’ve posted a photo dump in there before and I’m a fairly neutral fan of them, it’s not just one person. Why would it be active when they haven’t posted/done anything? Seems a bit silly to expect people to talk in circles about the same thing over and over until something new is posted.
I’m honestly a bit surprised they got their own thread because they’re such a boring couple online (as in they don’t post about each other that much save for the occasional photo dump). Like that thread is never gonna be super active or get hundreds of pages.

Hi Australian friends! I need a bit of guidance. I promised my gf we would go to Aus for the Asian cup if it were awarded to Australia to host. I also plan to propose to her on this trip (which she is aware of lol we have talked about it) so there will be a lot riding on it. We have never been to Australia before. We live in BC in Canada. Context: my gf loves the Matildas, always has. Yes, even over our own NT. I am not a football person but had to find somewhere to post about this she wouldn’t see. I want to plan as much of this trip as I can myself so it’s a surprise to her despite her knowing we are going to go. I know not much can be planned yet without knowing the venues and stuff but which host city is my best bet? Are there tourism websites you recommend? Just looking to get the ball rolling on loose planning even if it has to be vague for a bit. I will be popping in and out in the lead up no doubt and I don’t want to make an account so will just sign my posts with a smile emoji.

Also sorry in advance if I am posting at a wacky time for your timezone lol let me know when would be better

Another day, no Matildas squad! Maybe tomorrow! Still they usually hype it up, so I'm assuming it won't be until the weekend or next week as we haven't heard a single peep from Tony.

Mini said in that podcast she just posted about that the return to play from her surgery is normally 10 weeks, and shes doing well and feeling really good and is pretty confident she will be fine for the olympics. great news!
Also says that Clara will be there with the two kids....AND that this will NOT be her last international tournament....wonder whether the home asian cup might have changed her mind?
She's really not that old and can def still be playing at the Asian cup. She did say she wants to have another baby though so maybe she's just going to push that back till after Asian cup now.
My guess is also that the home Asian Cup might have sealed the deal for her.

Maybe she'll stay at West Ham for the 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 seasons (assuming she has a release clause if they were to be relegated), then plays in the Asian Cup at home and retires internationally, and moves back to Australia with Clara and the kids, and has baby #3. I could see her being the type of player who plays domestically after retiring internationally, though, I have a feeling she'll come back after the next baby like she did with Harper. Mini comes from a big family herself and I could actually see them having 4 or 5 kids total.

Yes 2026. And yes they will do games in Sydney/Brisbane/Perth. I guess technically the cities aren't confirmed only the states involved (QLD/NSW/WA), but it's expected to the capital cities.

This is cute af omg. You’re a Tillies fan wag!! 🥹 better learn the players so you can get a jersey to commemorate this experience for yourself, too. I don’t think you’ll watch our girls play in person that many times and not come away with a fave! How special.
I do know a few names! I watched all of your World Cup games but I don’t think I have a favourite myself right now. Definitely looking forward to seeing them in person, they were here this past December but I had to work. My gf went to both games with her sister and best friend. I have yet to see them up close myself!

This is the cutest thing ever!!!! I am so happy for you and your gf!!!!!! Thanks for being so nice and supporting our team, we love that. My partner is not a football fan either but tries to take an interest in it because they know I love it, and it means the WORLD to me.

They haven't confirmed the cities yet, but it's looking like Sydney, Brisbane and Perth. I wouldn't expect too many games to be played in Perth though, as it is quite a far way to travel and no doubt they will be targetting fans on the east coast of Aus to attend the games mainly. Sydney will be great, and likely host the final etc. It also has more stadiums with more seats, so getting tickets would be easier I'd assume - though the population size is much larger. Sydney is also your typical tourist destination so if you're looking for a Holiday as well then that is probably the most obvious choice. However Brisbane is great too and has really been improving in recent years, I actually think it's on par with Melbourne now in terms of how cool it is - I have a few international friends who prefer Brisbane over Sydney these days which is interesting. You could always fly between the two as the flight is under 2 hours and it could be quite fun - I did this for the WC to see as many games as I could and really rated it. If you do decide to stay in Brisbane, I'd suggest staying in South Bank as you then can do more fun things in between the games and the teams will likely stay there too. Once you get in the suburbs, it becomes pretty dull.
I think we would like to make a holiday out of it! Definitely a multi-week trip. I figure if we are going to do it, we may as well do the whole thing and make it a trip of a lifetime. So I’m fine flying between cities and just picking one to be our base. A more touristy city would make sense for that as we are certainly not locals lol and we have never been so the more fun we can have the better. I think my only requirements for myself are that I really want to go to a zoo and see a Koala (I am so sorry I’m sure this is very lame and touristy), and I want to find a beach to have coffee and walk on at sunrise by myself on just one day of the trip. Hopefully neither of those things are a tough ask 😅

-😊
Sydney is your best best then, lots of little beaches and nice coastal walks. You'd have to go to Noosa or the Gold Coast from Brisbane to see a beach - which are nice day trips!! But you'd need to hire a car to really get the most out of it. Sydney has Taronga Zoo in the city where you can see Koalas, or Brisbane has Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary (both have other native animals). Both of those cities I'd recommend 100% visiting and attending games there. If you have time in between the football, go check out Melbourne too. Enjoy and best of luck with planning!!
Agree with above. Base yourself in Sydney and fly to any games you want to watch up in Brisbane. The Tillies will be between these two cities as well. Also as a biased Victorian, definitely recommend a trip down to Melbourne, the City has a taste of everything. Looking back at the '22 Asian Cup dates it was held in Jan/Feb, so if it's similar in '26 and you are making it a multi week trip, would also suggest getting over to Perth and WA. It is absolutely beautiful over there. The City itself is so and so (except the botanic gardens you can spend hours there lying on the grass overlooking the CBD and Swan River 😍), but Fremantle is a must and a great place to stay.

This is cute af omg. You’re a Tillies fan wag!! 🥹 better learn the players so you can get a jersey to commemorate this experience for yourself, too. I don’t think you’ll watch our girls play in person that many times and not come away with a fave! How special.

That's amazing news have def missed Mini. Did she say what her injury was?

She's really not that old and can def still be playing at the Asian cup. She did say she wants to have another baby though so maybe she's just going to push that back till after Asian cup now.
She turns 32 in August, so will be turning 34 the year of the cup. Older, but certainly not past it by then. And a crucial depth piece

the dvd and ellie thread is surprisingly quiet
It's because there is just one psycho ellie/daan fan who posted non stop in here and replied to themselves and then a thread was created and it's clear she was the main one. So if she isn't posting, no one is.
No. I’ve posted a photo dump in there before and I’m a fairly neutral fan of them, it’s not just one person. Why would it be active when they haven’t posted/done anything? Seems a bit silly to expect people to talk in circles about the same thing over and over until something new is posted.

Aww this is so cute. Congrats to you and your gf. Love that at least one Canadian loves the Tillies. This is the evening for Aussies so I'd a great time for you to post. Tourism wise, I think Sydney is your best bet but depends on how long your trip is because if it's 2-3 weeks, which I recommend if you're travelling from Canada, then I think you can actually try to catch a game in every city there'll be a game (Sydney, Brisbane, Perth). Sydney and Brisbane is on the east coast so can be done very easily and closely together. Perth is on the west coast and is a 5ish hr flight from Sydney. Recommend maybe flying into Perth and flying out of Sydney or vice versa so you can do all three cities. In any case you have over a year to plan but very exciting nonetheless. Congrats again :)

Okay, ngl, I hated the new Arsenal kit when I first saw photos of it by itself, but seeing Cait and Kyra in it, my mind has been changed. They make it look so good.
That is hilarious, I had the same thoughts! Only have started to like it since this kit. I also saw they have red shorts which will be sick. I like Kyra and Caitlin photoshoots together they are cute.
I know it's because they're using Adidas athletes to promote the the kit since Arsenal is Adidas, but I kinda like that it's Caitlin and Kyra promoting the kit together. Nothing against Steph at all, it just seems a lot more fun with Cait & Kyra. And kudos to Foudys' for using our Aussies to promote their release of the kit!

Arsenal’s second GK is likely heading to Villa (they are basically doing a straight swap sounds like - DVD to Arsenal, D’Angelo to Villa) which rules that out as a move for Mac. I think she stays at West Ham and have thought that the whole time but I think it’s even more certain now.
Apparently the other Villa keeper will also depart, so it is possible that Macca could start over D'Angelo if they both go?
da. it would basically be a lateral move. for all the upheaval would it really be worth it?
Simply dont see her moving unless its to a significantly better team/better situation or for a lot more money, neither of these things would happen at Villa. She is way too happy off the field at West Ham to leave for something that wont be drastically better than her current situation. Only WSL options would be Spurs (Votikova was wanted by NWSL in Jan, Spencer is 33) or United (Earps likely leaving, Tullis-Joyce??)
Tullis-Joyce is a very good keeper, I watched her play in the NWSL. Honestly not sure Macca could take the #1 spot over her.

I think Macca will extend at West Ham, even if it's just a short-term contract. She's comfortably their #1, is the club captain and player of the season, and is very happy off the pitch as well with Kirsty and her other friends as well. I don't think she would leave all of that unless it was for a much better opportunity. Villa is a lateral move at best, and there's a lot of uncertainty there with Carla Ward leaving.
Given the amount United paid for Tullis-Joyce, I assumed that was with the intention for her to take the spot when Earps leaves this summer.
Lateral move seems pointless given what she would have to sacrifice personally off the field, why leave your partner and the life you have built there to move 2 hours away in a similar set up with less friends around?
All signs point towards her staying in my opinion - only reason I think she might leave is because she has mentioned in a few interviews this season how her goal is to play champions league one day, and that clearly wont happen at west ham and this could be her best chance of getting a move like that. But only way I see that happening is abroad, and that brings up the same questions regarding her personal life and how much she is willing to change in that regard.

Hm interesting, does anyone have any games to recommend to watch in which Teagan had stand out performances with the Matildas? Curious to see her at peak action!
Probably the Tokyo game against GB where she stonewalled Caroline Weir on a PK. She made seven or eight huge saves that game and was POTM
Great thank you! I’ll have to check that out
Looks like 7 took down all the olympics footage. Can't find anything on 7plus. Is there anywhere else we can watch it?
Someone posted this google drive years a go and it still seems to be there.

I think the Olympics website also has a highlights and replays section where you can rewatch the matches but you do need to sign up for free

I know people on here have mentioned that Teagan will likely replace Macca as number one goalkeeper when back in full health, but do they have really big differences in terms of their goalkeeping? Thought Macca did a good job at the World Cup but I wasn’t around when Teagan was playing pre-concussion so I haven’t seen her at her best either
Yes, they do. Teagan, when healthy, is quite a few levels above. Without the head injury Macca never would have started in the World Cup. We all know it, she herself knows it. It’s why she’s going so hard getting as many sponsorships as she can now that she’s had the opportunity/kind of shot to overnight fame over it. She wasn’t even one of the two keepers for the last Olympics, she went as an alternate. Her game has grown immensely over the past few years and she made the absolute most of her opportunity. Not saying at ALL that she doesn’t deserve the success and recognition she now has. She deserves every bit! But Teagan will overtake her and we will be a bit stronger at the back when she does. Her distribution is better and she’s better with her feet than Mac is.
I am a Macca fan (always love an underdog) and I will freely admit that Teagan is superior in near enough all aspects as a keeper and will undoubtedly regain the top spot again in due course. Mac took her chance from the Cup of Nations last year and continued that form and I actually thought Teagan might have got the starting spot back by the time the Olympics came around but that doesn't seem to be the case. Macca's career was quite up and down and she was never seemingly able to play well for the national team in her limited chances and then all of a sudden last year she just took her chance and the change in her form over the last 18 months has been unexpected to say the least. With Teagan starting in the WSL and likely be more settled heading into next season I think if she stays fit she will likely regain the spot back, but fair play to Macca for doing so well that this is even a discussion at this point.

They are of very similar level so it wouldn’t be guaranteed. It would be good for her if she could secure the starting spot but it wouldn’t be for sure. With Teagan as Liverpool’s clear number one now (Laws, who was ahead of her when she arrived, has stalled contract negotiations because she doesn’t want to be behind Teagan and that’s what would happen if Laws stayed) I’m not sure Macca can afford to be benched for her club. Yes, Teagan is going to overtake her eventually anyway, we know this. But for Mac to stay competitive for the spot for a while she needs to be starting week in week out

The yellow home kit doesn't look too bad. Or maybe it's just the lighting.

Kits are now available to buy of ASICS if anyone's interested. Assuming the FA shop will stock kits closer to the Olympics?
