Feel like it’s been a bit quiet since camp got back - saw someone posted in the international thread that they expected more photo dumps from March and I agree! I guess we did get several photo dumps from camp, but curious to see what they got up to at home last month. I expected maybe some pics too from Maccas bday but I think too much time has passed now!
I feel like we go through waves of the girls being active and inactive, and it everyone always seems to sync up, haha. I did expect a bit more last week (national couples day last Fri was the exception) when everyone arrived back from camp, but I guess this week is all focus on the return of the WSL this weekend if we're talking the English league girls.

This convo is fine to have, you don’t need to use spoiler warnings. Nice to see the girlfriends following the insta page. I don’t think I’ve ever seen them like posts about their gfs, just Twitter posts.
Do you not follow Danielle on Instagram then? She’s all over Matildas posts all the time. Squad announcements, wins, stadium sellouts, and Ellie specific posts.
Not in the most recent international break but usually Kirsty is pretty active liking the tillies posts about Macca too. Daan always does.
My bad, I thought I was following Daan but just realised I wasn’t! Now I see all the likes hahaha cute!
Katie, Daan, Kirsty, Clara all following the Tillies. It seems it’s just Kristie who doesn’t. Love supportive girlfriends/fiancee’s of our girls.

First I’ve heard her partnering with YouFoodz. Can you share the link? Love this for Mac tho!

For those of us who can’t read it, can anyone give an idea of what it says regarding her hearing aids?

While I’m not sure the girls will be at the opening ceremony, if they can go and are able to wear the shorts (like Michelle) they’ll be banging!

Ew what is that skirt
The skirt looks like someone accidentally peed themselves and were super dehydrated.

Why do they dress them like they are 45+. So annoying when comparing our fits to Canada and even USA. Zero cool factor. I hope for the Matilda’s sake they don’t have to do any cringey photoshoots in the outfits….
There's absolutely no cringe whatsoever about representing your country at an Olympic Games. Australian colours...it should be and will be worn with pride.

Quick question - why do people seem so sure that Yallop is a guaranteed selection for the 18? To me she doesn’t seem like a player who can offer much to the team, I would be really worried if we needed to call upon her in the Olympics to play even a small role. People say because she can play loads of positions but don’t we have enough players within those positions to not need a jack of all trades master of none type?
Very easy - versatility and experience. She’s a no brainer for those two reasons alone. It cannot be understated how tough the Olympic schedule is. Rotation is key and can be the difference between winning and losing games because they’re so condensed. Meeks is a roster lock no question at all.
Yep, agree with this. And she's so reliable. She's such a sturdy sub, and you know she's going to put in the work and effort when she comes onto the pitch. You know what you're going to get from her.

She's in the 18, every day of the week.

Delighted to see these two still going strong, a much underrated duo! Might be nice so see if Hayley returns to the WSL, to be nearer Izzy.

I actually wonder a bit of the versatility of Torps is going to hurt Charli for an Olympic spot since the roster is so small. She’s so versatile and you need that in a condensed squad. Though as far as I know we don’t have any updates on Clare’s stress fracture as of now? So if she’s not available that would push Steph into the CB role like she was against Mexico and would leave an opening for Charli on the left to come in off the bench if Torpey started there instead, or to start if Torpey was being used elsewhere. The benefit of Charli of course being she can play both sides. She filled in on the right for a whole year when Ellie was out.
Pre-game interviews and the latest Far Post pod also mentioned Torps potentially overtaking Charli for squad selection. I'd still take them both as Charli stepped up massively when Ellie was out. Squad rotation will be key in such a condensed tournament.

Have we seen enough of Torps yet to be jumping the gun this quickly? I'd still like to see how she does against stronger opponents, same as Heyman. China will be a good test.
I’d take them both too. Torps, to be fair, has held her own really well in her minutes with SD. We haven’t seen a lot of her in the Tillies setup yet of course but I think her versatility makes her a lock for the squad since it is small. Charli I would say is equally important in that she could fill in for Steph OR Ellie and in a tournament where the schedule is so condensed rotation will be super important, as you’ve said. Torps could fill in for either of them too but she can also play up higher on the wings no problem. So both bring things to the squad we will need and can use
I’d be taking both torps and Charli, although a lack of playing time at spurs has probably hurt her recently. Steph can fill in at CB if needed, Charli can cover both sides and Torps can also cover the wings too. If it’s two out of Charli, torps and polks I’d be leaving polks at home honestly. I’d rather shift Steph to CB and bring in Charli or torps rather than play Polks I’m not going to lie. Her pace is non existent and it’ll affect the way we play having to use her against pacy forwards.

Can go either way on this. People are pushing both directions, gay or straight. Maybe she is bisexual which is totally fine but more importantly we are talking about Olympics squad and no matter how fine her form is right now, it's unlikely she will make the squad.

So is Heyman officially part of the 18 squad then?

I mean…we knew she would be as of the second qualifier game pretty much. She is a bandaid solution to not having Sam for Paris. It’s not officially official until the roster is out though. Lydia is the one who did the Olympic kit launch even though she was injured at the time and she’s def not going to the Olympics, so it doesn’t guarantee anything
Yeah I’ll be honest i felt it was a little awkward having it “confirmed” based on the way she’s talking - cheer “us” on, there is no way she wouldn’t be in the squad now I guess. But I’d say Tony has had a serious chat to her before bringing her into the squad again, as well as what prep she will do in lead up to the games with a-league being over. Can pretty confidently assume the only ones who are still competing for a squad position are those who haven’t played many minutes in the last few friendlies.

Can’t help but still sad that Sam won’t be in Olympics. I feel like we have more chance if we have a healthy Sam up front. Considering GB and Netherlands are out I hope the Matildas can get at least bronze
I’m sorry, I love Sam but this has been proven wrong at the World Cup. We can shine with AND without Sam. I’m not delusional thinking we can beat Spain or even France again with some of their key players back and home support, but bronze is a real possibility. Of course we need a little luck on our side too with the post group matches. This team really needs some hardware to lift our confidence up further.

I know we won against Ireland, Denmark and Canada without Sam but Olympics is different (only Canada is in the Olympics this time). There’s less days off and we were playing home ground in WC too. I’m not saying we will win gold if Sam would be in the Olympics but i think we will have more chance this time considering there are less competitive teams for this upcoming Olympics. Even USA has become worse so I’m hoping we can beat them this time

This just give me the ick … she retired now Matilda’s have a massive name and following she wants back in after them not being recognised while she was in the team …not a fan she’s to old look at all the young guns she will not beat in Paris
You sound like an ageist troll. It’s not like she’s been huffing and puffing doing nothing on the pitch. She’s top scorer for club and put in the work during the qualifiers too. Who cares about her motivations if at the end of the day she’s working hard.
She was a ghost in the Mexico game tbf
Most 9s are ghosts against top teams, they just need one or two opportunities. Sam was a ghost in the FA cup final last year, until that one opportunity she buried that won the game. It’s unfair to judge one game. If she’d ghosted UZ then yeah I agree that would be scary going into the Olympics. China will be a good gauge.
The World Cup proved we don't need an out and out 9. Our forwards, especially Caitlin, all stepped up and drifted into the needed central positions. I'm sure that what the US, Germany and Zambia are going to look at more and try to stop, then Michelle being a striker and the focus.

I read, or watched in Tony's interview, that he deliberately put Torps and Charli at LB, both out of position (though he did reference Charli playing 1 game for Spurs at LB) in the Mex game while Steph was CB. Think he was trying to work out who would be the better LB backup for the Olympics, as they can both naturally play on the right.

Makes sense to name the squad early, so those not named can go off and enjoy their off season and those named can get going with the pre Olympics training and plan ahead.
Effectively anyone not named in the china friendlies (aside from gorry who might still be injured by then) will definitely not be making the Olympic squad then.

I’d expect Heyman to be in the 18, but honestly I don’t think she will start/be hugely influential in the team if her Mexico performance was anything to go off. Unfortunately there are no Uzbekistan type teams in the Olympics and I think she will struggle to be impactful against the top teams but because we don’t have another 9 option she will definitely be in the squad. I hope I’m wrong and she scores loads of goals

Olympic squad expected to be announced just after the China games in early June!!

Question though, I know the World Cup had an extended squad and was then cut down.. Will the Olympics be the same, or will it be a straight 22 announced and from there, Tony will choose the main 18?
No there won’t be an extended squad. It will be announced as 18 + four alternates
Thanks! Wasn't around for Tokyo, so wasn't sure :)
No problem! It was a bit different for Tokyo since due to COVID the four alternates were just part of the squad instead, so it was 22

While I’m not sure the girls will be at the opening ceremony, if they can go and are able to wear the shorts (like Michelle) they’ll be banging!
Flicking through some of our old opening ceremony looks and this one isn't great. Not too sure about that skirt.
I don't know if the Comm Games have a different sponsor, and I know soccer isn't one of the included sports, but I really did like our uniforms for Birmingham in 2022.

She’s only 35! She’s fitter and less injury prone than a lot of younger players
