She lost to the homophobe.
Had a 4-2 lead and then, after a questionable call she self destructed. I don't know what happened to her after Abu Dhabi, where she beat the same player 6-2, 6-0, where she hit so many winners and played an agressive game, but something is wrong with her since that tournament.
Now here comes the clay season, her only shot at winning a significant tournament, but it won't happen as long as she plays like this. Her Abu Dhabi form was good enough to beat anyone on clay, except for Iga of course.
She had 2 finals this year already, clay and Charleston would be a good place to win a title, but she needs significant changes.
Be honest, she had only one real final this season with zero chances for the win. These talks about changes have been going around for a year or even more with no real changes. Actually, I don't care of the titles, esp if it would be 250-500 category. I want some big bright sparky matches, when you go and kick out real top player in style. If Noskova, Kalinskaya, even Blinkova, Collins and others can, why Dasha can't? I'm just envious and I miss this feeling.
Maybe her priorities are not victories anymore. Sometimes it feels like she is playing tennis to have material for the vlog. That's why the serious coach who demanded a higher effort and more focus left and the goofy Italian guy who praises the vlog is now "coaching" Daria. That 2022 interview turned her into a celebrity with opinions instead of a tennis player, she is in the news with her "activism", not results. I would not be surprised to see her retiring in a few years, when the vlog can't use the same places anymore. Talking about Russia, Ukraine, LGBT stuff, WTA politics was more important for her than being a better player. Other players just worked and improved quietly.
Or maybe she is just not a really good tennis player, that's all. Even when she does work hard, she collects all her points with this vulture tactic, gaining some points here and there, but she is not super talented and her game is just overall weak, without weapons. The WTA rankings work in a weird way, her being ranked above Kudermetova, Keys, Svitolina, Haddad Maia, Muchova doesn't really make sense, there is no way she is a better player than them. Based on her game, her serve, I would guess her ranking to be maybe 70-80, not 11th. Kalinskaya or Noskova would deserve that 11th place in the ranking, not Daria.
