These teams with tiny areas have got to move to bigger venues. If you want to be taken seriously you can't play in arenas smaller than a mid-major college.
What's the capacity of these tiny arenas?
Unacceptable:
Gateway Center Arena (
Atlanta Dream) –
3,500 Seats
Entertainment and Sports Arena (
Washington Mystics) –
4,200
College Park Center (
Dallas Wings) –
7,000
Mohegan Sun Arena (
Connecticut Sun) –
9,323
Wintrust Arena (
Chicago Sky) –
10,387
Barely passable:
Michelob Ultra Arena (
Las Vegas Aces) –
12,000
Major league:
Barclays Center (
New York Liberty) –
17,732
Gainbridge Fieldhouse (
Indiana Fever) -
17,923
Climate Pledge Arena (
Seattle Storm) –
18,100
Talking Stick Resort Arena (
Phoenix Mercury) –
18,422
Staples Center (
Los Angeles Sparks) –
18,997
Target Center (
Minnesota Lynx) –
19,356
I don’t really know how they pick draftees or the top draft, but with the low number of seats was it ever very likely that Caitlin Clark would be sent to any team with less seats than the big arenas? Business wise it makes sense to send her somewhere you can sale more seats.
I couldn’t imagine her going to Atlanta and only having 3,500 seats to sale. That seems like a huge disadvantage for the Dream if the NCAAW and league keeps growing.
