USC and USC pre-season top 2?
Probably. But remember how everyone said a year ago that LSU would be an unbeatable super-team?
da
LSU's problems were that they couldn't shoot and their perimeter defense was mid.

I was never on the LSU hype train for this season. They honestly got incredibly lucky in that 2023 run. I personally don't think Gottlieb is that great of a coach, but they do have the talent. Will be a fun and interesting team to watch next season and they will be right up there with SC if they do gel. Now if UConn gets pass their injuries and Strong lives up to the hype, they'll also be a contender.

This is why I wasn’t quick to jump on the “Juju is going to break Clark’s scoring record!!” train.

With these transfers and the recruits USC already had lined up, Juju isn’t going to need to take 20-22 shots a game for the next 3 years. Her efficiency will improve I’m sure, but the entire offensive load isn’t going to be on her like it was for Clark all 4 years.
She won't need to but she will. She'll be playing off the ball more but her shot volume will be the same.

Will Azzi be ready for the start of next season?
She should be. Likely start on a minutes restriction but that will be 11 months from surgery and 9 month recoveries are very common.
For Azzi's first ACL tear, she was cleared for basketball activities/after 9 months. This tear wasn't as bad as the first one and by all accounts from UConn and their beat reporters, she's well ahead of schedule. I imagine like the above said, she'll have a minutes restriction through 2024 and then in Jan '25 probably rejoins the starting lineup. I also think this is why they actually need Chen. Behind Paige, there's only one other true PG on the team and let's be honest, KK has a good bit of growing to do. This will help ease the burden on PB and brings in a 4 year starter. Experience is invaluable and Chen offers 15 and 5 while also being a solid defender.
Yeah Paige cannot be playing 40 minutes a game every night again. You could tell her legs were gone by the end of the tourney. Chen will allow her to get a decent rest most games.
Felt like she and Aaliyah had absolutely nothing left at the end of that Iowa game. They had the unenviable task of having to play outstanding defense and be the primary scoring options with 0 rest for like 3 straight games. If anything, UConn just needs bodies and Geno needs to use them.

Jumping topics to others in the thread, I'm curious to see how Kiki and Juju works out. I think it's no secret that Juju was a bit of a shot chucker this season and she had like a 40% usage rate. It'll be interesting to see how they work together, plus that massive freshman class they are bringing in.

With S. Carolina, Cardoso will no doubt be missed. You just can't do much with her height and if I'm not mistaken, I think the tallest on their roster now is 6'3 or 6'4 so that evens the post playing field a bit for other teams. Not to say S. Carolina will be worse off, it's just heard to deny that type of post presence.

WCBB is going to be awesome next year.

Chen actually played off the ball quite a bit last year. It would be ideal if UConn could find a way for her and Paige to really split PG duties during games. Throw different looks at teams.

Her point scoring might go down if Azzi gets back. Just not enough shots to go around. But being a threat is actually what matters as much as anything. To take defensive pressure off her teammates.

Don’t think this moves the needle for them. Still a top 5 team, still can’t compete with SC without adding a big.
da
Who's the Cardoso replacement for SC and how big is she?
I am guessing they play Kitts (6-2) and Watkins (6-3) at the 4 and 5. So not huge. But still multiple bigs. They also have 6-3 Feagin that could compete.
Then their advantage isn't that big, unless their bigs can also shoot.

Didn't he also call Juju the best college player?

And to think just a few years ago USC hadn't made the NCAA tourney in almost a decade and just three times since 1997 before last season. The power of getting top players to stay home.
I am not convinced their coach is that good.
Will be interested to see how she moves away from an over reliance on Juju and incorporates her new talent.
