For those interested in recent kpop industry drama, new/old look at what happened with Gfriend, and why their timeline is more connected to NJ, rather than LSF. Link under spoiler:
As far as why this could be an interest to GFRIEND and LE SSERAFIM fans. Well, for years now there’s not only been uncertainty about the reasons for GFRIEND disbanding, but also the circumstances of Source Music’s debt when they disbanded. This led to tension between fandoms, with HYBE company stans (gross) and LE SSERAFIM fans mocking GFRIEND as being flops for it and them needing to go due to driving the company into bankruptcy, while GFRIEND stans always held animosity towards LE SSERAFIM, thinking it was them that led Source to kick the girls who built the company to the curb. However, this accounting of the events seems to paint a picture where Source was actually in debt due to incurring all the costs of training a major project girl group in NewJeans, who were then poached by Min Hee Jin for ADOR (which was signed off on by HYBE). Then, in response to the debt they were left with, Source seemed to rush the formation of LE SSERAFIM, which explains their short (and almost nonexistent by K-pop standards) training time, thus their formation seems unrelated to GFRIEND.
This article is painstakingly trying to frame MHJ as the cause of Source Music's debt and GFRIEND disband. Basically, Source Music cast five girls and trained them (ALLEGEDLY), but MHJ stole them and it caused the company's debt?
1) It doesn't cost that much to train five girls. A company has multiple trainees, and most will never debut. There is a selection process. It must all be included in the final cost/revenue calculation. Kpop functions as the rest of the entertainment industry, counting on the fact one hit can compensate for 10 misses. I am sure Source Music didn't go into to debt because they had to train and select five girls.
2) NewJeans' members were not even that well-trained when they debuted. They were good dancers, yes, but awful vocalists. Danielle was the only one who could hold a note. I doubt too much money went into giving them any vocal lessons, or Source Music are fools and paid a fortune for 0 results.
3) NewJeans' success is MHJ's making. She is the one with the creative vision. She proved in SM that she was very talented. She is behind some of the best concepts in Kpop. Give the same girl group to Source Music and they wouldn't know what to do with them. They are creatively bankrupt (I loved GFRIEND's members, but they recycled their concept over all their career), and LE SSERAFIM is a clout-chasing mess. Basically, GFRIEND were one trick ponies and LSF are sell-outs. Source Music just doesn't know how to make a good girl group.
